Background of the study
Library usage is increasingly recognized as a pivotal factor influencing academic achievements among students in diverse educational settings. In Jos North Local Government Area, the role of libraries has evolved from traditional book repositories to dynamic centers that support academic excellence through access to digital and print resources (Abubakar, 2023). Recent initiatives aimed at increasing student engagement have led to enhanced library environments, where regular usage is associated with improved study habits, critical thinking, and research skills. Studies indicate that students who actively use library resources tend to perform better academically due to enhanced access to academic journals, textbooks, and research materials (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the integration of technology in library services has provided students with modern tools for information retrieval and learning, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application (Suleiman, 2023). Despite these advancements, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited operating hours, and sporadic outreach programs persist, potentially undermining the full impact of library usage on academic performance. The present study explores these dynamics by investigating the correlation between library usage patterns and academic outcomes among students in Jos North, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of how libraries contribute to educational success and identifying areas for improvement (Chinaza, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite significant investments in library infrastructure, there remains an unclear understanding of how library usage directly correlates with students’ academic achievements in Jos North. Preliminary observations suggest discrepancies in resource utilization and academic performance, with some students benefiting significantly while others lag behind. Factors such as limited access during peak hours, inadequate promotion of available services, and socio-economic barriers may contribute to these disparities (Musa, 2024). This study aims to pinpoint these challenges and assess the extent to which library usage influences academic outcomes, thereby addressing the gap in empirical evidence and guiding future improvements in library service delivery (Tijani, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To investigate the correlation between library usage frequency and academic achievement.
To identify factors influencing effective library utilization among students.
To propose strategies to optimize library services for enhanced academic performance.
Research questions
What is the relationship between library usage and academic achievement?
Which factors hinder effective utilization of library resources?
How can library services be improved to support better academic outcomes?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it bridges the gap between library resource usage and student academic performance. Its findings will guide policymakers and educational stakeholders in developing targeted interventions to enhance library services, thus contributing to improved academic results and overall educational quality in Jos North (Okeke, 2024).
